In my video "How to Deal Mini-Baccarat", I asked the audience for different methods of figuring out how to take the commission out of the Player's bet. (14:29 mark) If you have an alternative method that helps you or if your casino (or country) does it differently, please post a response. I love to see how each casino/country is different in their procedures and methods.
A viewer emailed me with his suggestion and I wanted to place that information here on the forum.
"In the UK I believe all casinos pay winning banker bets with the
commission already taken out. I think this was due to both tradition and
a law (which may have changed recently) that made it illegal to issue
any form of credit to a player. there is also a general opinion in many
UK casinos that dealers must have strong math skills and are never
allowed to "make things easier" for themselves. An example would be the
way roulette bets can be paid out in stages in Las Vegas and I assume the
rest of the USA. This would be strictly forbidden in all but the rarest
cases and seen as an admission of incompetence.
As always there are many different ways of thinking about the calculations but one of the most common is as follows (it does however involve subtraction): There are 2 parts to the process. The first is to figure out the part of the payment in 0.25 and 1.00 value chips. The second part is to figure out the part of the payment in chips of 5.00 and above. using your example of $325 we go.
1) The 0.25 and 1.00 chips will only ever directly apply to amounts under $100. So we separate the $325 into $300 and $25. the $25 has a tax of $1.25. the payment would be 25 - 1.25 or 23.75. the part of the payment using 1.00 and 0.25 chips is 3.75. this is also 5 - 1.25. or you can just memorize them or you can use the counting up method similar to the video which I do. In my head I think $25 needs 0.25 to take it to $30 or 0.50 to take it to 35 or 0.75 to take it to 40. then at the nearest 20 I think 40 needs $1 to take it to 60 or $2 to get to 80 or $3 to get to 100 always our final target. So the 0.75 and $3 gives us the 3.75 payment portion using just the lower value chips. As you are counting up in your head I would be taking the chips/coins out of the rack, one value in each hand and then lay it out on the felt.
2)The partial payout using $5 chips and above can simply be described as removing $5 from the original bet for every $100 in the original, always rounding up(one exception discussed later). 325 rounds up to 400 so we need to take 4x$5 from the original bet or $20. 325 minus 20 is 305 [the one exception is if the amount ends in 05. eg 305. this makes a difference as the 4.75 low value chips or smash as we call it totally pay off the $5 portion of the bet leaving just the $300 as a separate bet which of course only needs to take 3x5 or 15 as tax.) get the 305 out however u want 3 blacks and a red and you've already got your 3.75 from before for a total of 308.75 same as the video
There are other ways of thinking about it and expansions but this is I feel the simplest and most concise I can do for now. It may seem unnecessarily complicated on a bet of 325 but it removes the need to calculate the tax of the original bet. When the bets get larger and uneven like 9785 that step of calculating the tax gets longer and must be done only in the head and kept until the payout is made up. The separation method (or "unit method" taught maybe slightly differently) I feel requires less calculations. That said, if you get particularly quick at working out tax just in your head without using chips (like the 10% and half it method) it may not be worth learning the UK way.
On 9785 I simply go 3 quarters is smash then 98 units off the bet or 98x$5. probably easier to say 100 off then add the 2 so 9785 - 500 is 9285 plus the 2 fives is 9295. add the smash of 0.75 for 9295.75
The other method needs to get to 489.25 somehow then go 3 quarters get to 490 2 fives gets to 500, then I guess 8500 gets to 9k and the final 785 to get to 9785 all without losing "where you are" in the calculation or you have to go back to the last bit you remember for sure.
I think a bet of 9785 is probably unfairly easier for the UK method as subtracting 98x5 isn't anywhere as near as subtracting lets say 76x5 but there is an added advantage of being able to pay and take without going back on yourself. for example if I needed to take 18x5 off a bet of 1745 I can either think $90 off the bet or pay 1700 which is 45 off and then take the 45 from the original bet. its even easier if you train yourself to "see" in units of $5 as I know I need 18 units and I can "see" $45 as 9 units or a green as 5 and 4 reds as 4 ones. then I just have to fix the smash and get out 1700 which is fewer steps and chips.
To do that the other way you have to get from 1745 to 87.25 then get out the 1657.75 payment then realize that you can do 1700 and take the 45 instead of 1655, put the 55 back in the rack and get another 100 out."
